We recently returned to The Lowther after renovations following the floods in 2012 were completed. Our first review was impressed by the original update of the pub and the latest changes are even more trendy and plush. Downstairs has been bricked out to prepare for future floods but does it in fine style with brick, stone, leather and vibrant illumination, but upstairs has been neglected somewhat and does looks a bit tired. The toilets are tiled out to the max which keeps them clean and presentable. Unfortunately the small selection of hand pumps seems like an afterthought and most of the staff were terrible at serving a proper pint, on the plus side it was pretty cheap. On the evening The Lowther is definitely a pre-club or late night alternative for the nightclub next-door and the young crowd reflects this, so it can be a little chavvy and loud both with music and the clientèle During the day, especially when their riverside cafe area is open, it is a great place to visit and in the Summer months that converted space by the river shared with Plonkers and the Kings Arms is one of the best alfresco places in York.
